Energy Management – Heating-Cooling analytics
No matter how well a building runs, faults, technical problems and actions by occupants or maintenance contractors can lead to significant energy waste even when using modern energy management. Though good monitoring systems can detect waste as it occurs and pinpoint where remedial action should be taken to stop future losses, human intervention is required and actions are rarely possible real-time. The situation gets even worse if equipments are all the same old devices and probably not the most efficient ones in their categories. Avoiding energy waste requires radical approach: automatically change setpoints, alter time scheduled actions, switch on and off equipment on priority basis real-time.
Why is that so important?
According to statistics, 30-45% of building’s energy is devoted to heating and cooling, and 30% of energy in building is wasted. So, heating and cooling is the most significant energy waster.
Fortunately, we can detect and avoid energy waste by using a smart control system, developed in VISION. What really interesting is, however, that from one single data: the daily energy consumption or the used natural gas. On the top of all that, EMS can answer a series of very important questions, including building characteristic, heating-cooling days in a year, efficiency of the heating system, seasonal dependency, quality of the control, specialties of the building and more. Please check out this video:
Heating-cooling can contribute with the Building Automation System (that can be VISION as well). The common technic is to download a setpoint offset, a plus-minus (drift away) value to BAS, which can take and use this value or ignore depending on the logic of building control in the current situation. Thus, you can avoid energy waste for sure before it would actually occur.
The main questions the heating-cooling system can answer:
• What is the building’s heating and cooling energy demand?
• What is the building characteristic (kWh/˚C)?
• What is the efficiency of the heating-cooling system?
• How many days the heating-cooling system in a year is required to operate?
• Can we detect and restrict the unjustified energy use?
• What is the seasonal dependency of energy efficiency?
• Heating-cooling control is working as expected?
• What are the potential savings in total?
From one single data, as mentioned (because the indoor temperature can be replaced by setpoint or an estimate (22 ˚C), the outdoor temperature may be derived from one of the closest meteorological stations). VISION X10 provides the most complete energy management solution for the analytics and control of heating and cooling.
Proptech Hungary Conference 3.0
Heating-Cooling was the focus of my presentation at PropTech Hungary conference 3.0, but I took this opportunity to emphasize other important fields of building energy efficiency, such as predictive consumption profiles and the improvement of schedulers.
